چکیده

Natural fibers have been used as an alternative to synthetic ones for their greener character; banana fibers have the advantage of coming from an agricultural residue. Fibers have been extracted by mechanical means from banana tree pseudostems, as a strategy to valorize banana crops residues. To increase the mechanical properties of the composite, technical textiles can be used as reinforcement, instead of short fibers. To do so, fibers must be spun and woven. The aim of this paper is to show the viability of using banana fibers to obtain a yarn suitable to be woven, after an enzymatic treatment, which is more environmentally friendly. Extracted long fibers are cut to 50 mm length and then immersed into an enzymatic bath for their refining. Conditions of enzymatic treatment have been optimized to produce a textile grade of banana fibers, which have then been characterized. The optimum treating conditions were found with the use of Biopectinase K (100% related to fiber weight) at 45 °C, pH 4.5 for 6 h, with bath renewal after three hours. The first spinning trials show that these fibers are suitable to be used for the production of yarns. The next step is the weaving process to obtain a technical fabric for composites production.

Effect of Redmud Particulates on Mechanical Properties of BFRP Composites (TECHNICAL NOTE)

This article reports the effective usage of redmud(RM) an industrial waste ,as a  novel filler in polymer matrix. The composite has been fabricated with redmud as secondary reinforcement in banana fiber reinforced polyester (BFRP) using compression molding technique. The mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural and impact strength have been studied for different fiber weight percentage, ...

MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION AND ANALYSIS OF RANDOMLY DISTRIBUTED SHORT BANANA FIBER REINFORCED EPOXY COMPOSITES

Short banana fiber reinforced composites have been prepared in laboratory to determine mechanical properties. It has been observed that as soon as the percentage of the banana fiber increases slightly there is a tremendous increase in ultimate tensile strength, % of strain and young modulus of elasticity. Reinforcement of banana fibers in epoxy resin increases stiffness and decreases damping pr...

Multi-scale Unit Cell Analyses of Textile Composites

Unit cell homogenization techniques are applied on multiple length scales to compute the macroscopic hyperelastic stiffness characteristics of textile-reinforced polymer matrix composites. On the smallest scale (~50μm) the effective transversely isotropic properties of tows (or yarns) are computed based on both fiber and matrix properties. These position-dependent transversely isotropic effecti...

Experimental Study of The Mechanical Properties of Banana Fiber and Groundnut Shell Ash Reinforced Epoxy Hybrid Composite

Effect of addition of filler material to the natural fiber composite was experimentally investigated. Composites are manufactured by the conventional hand-layup method. All composites are made with a fixed banana fiber with 15% weight fraction addition of different weight fraction of (0, 3, 5, 7.5%) groundnut shell ash is added to the composite. Tensile, hardness, impact and compressive strengt...

Commingled CF/PEEK Hybrid Yarns for Use in Textile Reinforced High Performance Rotors

Owing to a higher melt viscosity compared to the thermoset plastics the impregnation of the textile reinforcement structure with a thermoplastic matrix is significantly difficult. Commingled hybrid yarns produced on the basis of air-jet texturing technique have the potential for a homogeneous distribution of reinforcement and matrix filaments over the yarn cross section. The so achieved very sh...
